AUSMUSIC SA is a not-for-profit organisation committed to providing education, training and advice for those who want to get into the music industry. AUSMUSIC SA runs a comprehensive SA industry website, runs music workshops in schools, gives free music workshops in disadvantaged schools, provides an advisory service for SA Artists and practitioners, runs industry development activities including events and seminars, runs music business courses and training as well as providing performance opportunities for young artists.
The musicsa.com.au web-site provides an opportunity for young people, artists, and the broader community to gain experience and skills in new technologies, music industry promotion and activities, while linking with the music community. The website has grown significantly over the last 18 months to become a ‘one stop shop' for local artists with over 40,000 individual visits per month and the majority of local artists listed.
AUSMUSIC SA is in regular contact with SA's 130 secondary schools providing literature and updates of programs. Aumsusic SA is directly involved in servicing a minimum of 35 secondary schools per year through weekly music workshops and performance opportunities, providing music experiences for over 500 young people in SA.
Ausmusic SA's industry development activities are co-ordinated by the Industry Development Officer, a role established in March 2007. The Industry Development Officer is responsible for skills development and business development for the South Australian contemporary music industry.
AUSMUSIC SA receives major funding from the South Australian Government through Arts SA, project funding from The Australia Council and APRA as well as corporate sponsors including Kelly & Co and Fat City (Fat Trax, Fat Media & Fat City) to provide support services and contemporary music education & training as follows:
1. Education and Training Programs
AUSMUSIC SA runs free music programs in various disadvantaged secondary schools across the state where an experienced working musician will run weekly workshops with students. These programs have the added benefit of providing much needed employment opportunities for contemporary music practitioners in South Australia.
Contemporary Music Pathways Program - The CMP Program places experienced musicians in schools to work with the students as a tutor on a weekly basis for 4 weeks, 8 weeks or the entire year. The program is available to all schools in South Australia (contact Ausmusic SA for a fee schedule)
Thanks to Arts SA and the Australia Council, Ausmusic SA is pleased to be able to provide CMP programs at no cost in up to 10 disadvantaged secondary schools per year. These programs are fully funded such that there is no cost to the school or students.
Music Mentors In Schools - Supported by the Sidney Myer Foundation the MMIS program places musicians in up to 5 disadvantaged secondary schools per year to assist young performers to achieve a musical project or specific musical outcome. Projects are over a maximum of 8 weeks and are at no cost.
Performance Opportunities - AUSMUSIC SA provides performance opportunities to secondary school musicians through the annual Generating Rock Australian Contemporary Music Showcase, Sounds Live and The CMP Showcase
Other Schools Programs - AUSMUSIC SA is active in schools across South Australia through community based programs such as Active 8 and VET in Schools.
Music Business Courses - AUSMUSIC SA delivers accredited Music Industry Skills (Business) Certificate 4 units of study each year to assist in the development of the SA Music Industry. Courses include Marketing, Event Management, Touring and Management In The Music Industry.
2. Industry Development Programs
Musicsa.com.au - The home of SA Music, Online - MusicSA (www.musicsa.com.au) is a website dedicated to the promotion of SA contemporary music artists of all genres, and to the support of industry practitioners.
The website aims to:
Louder Than Words SA Music Roadshow - Aimed at assisting in providing development and performance opportunities for artists in regional and outer-metro areas, the program features a free industry workshop followed by a showcase performance by the top bands in the region, headlined by an established successful artist originating from the region.
Industry Development Officer - The Industry Development Officer is responsible for delivery of projects and initiatives to support the South Australian contemporary music industry. Key roles of the position include:
- Provide a formal advisory service for SA artists and practitioners with an emphasis on marketing and distribution, promotion, business management, touring and funding.
- Establishment of a resource ‘library' for SA Artists and practitioners
- Expand on current training and skill development programs and opportunities with an emphasis on marketing and distribution, promotion, business management, touring and funding.
- Project development (new programs)
- To contribute to building and maintaining the sector's profile and its industry networks both locally and nationally
- Participation in forums and activities assisting the local and national industry sector to advance its strategic interests
The work of the Industry Development Officer feeds directly into the Music SA website, making these resources available to all SA artists and practitioners.
Corporate Governance
The South Australian Contemporary Music Company Ltd T/As Ausmusic SA was formed as a not for profit company on July 23, 1997. Since 1997 the majority of Ausmusic SA’s programs have focused on disadvantaged South Australian youth through the CMP program, Musicians in Schools, Generating Rock and Come Out Activities. With the inclusion of the Music SA project in 2004, Music Business and VET Training and the Industry Development officer in 2007, Ausmusic SA’s activities have expanded considerably to provide training and support for a wide range of music industry practitioners.The Company is administered by a Board of Directors with office-bearers comprising a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. Company finances are reviewed by an independent auditor on an annual basis. The Board is responsible for the employment of a General Manager who has the responsibility of day to day financial, resource and staff management.
