HILLTOP HOODS IN DA PARLIAMENT HOUSE

Following their recent success at the ARIA awards, Australia's most successful hip-hop artists, Hilltop Hoods, have announced the winners of the 2006 Hilltop Hoods Initiative.

In recognition of the important role that South Australian Government funding played in their early careers, in 2005, the Hoods decided to give something back to the industry by funding the Hilltop Hoods Initiative valued at $3000.

The annual initiative helps young and emerging South Australian hip-hop artists to manufacture and distribute a CD.  It also includes two mentorship sessions with Hilltop Hoods' Manager, PJ Murton.

The fund is managed by Arts SA in association with Carclew Youth Arts and the winner is selected by a local panel of hip-hop experts.

While there is usually only one winner, this year the calibre of applicants was so outstanding that two were selected by the panel.  The Government of South Australia provided the additional $3000.

The 2006 winners are: Subsketch, a 21-year old from Eden Hills and Particular People, a four-piece act from Nuriootpa.  Both have shown the talent and drive which could see them joining the Hoods at the top of the charts.

'We first got involved in the initiative to give emerging hip-hop artists a chance to jumpstart their careers.  It's great to see that this year, not one, but two acts, have been selected, which shows just how much talent is out there in South Australia', say the Hilltop Hoods.

'Hilltop Hoods have earned their place as the only hip-hop group in the country to achieve platinum record status and I highly commend their generosity in this initiative.  Their success is a great example of how targeted funding can help South Australian musicians build their careers.  The Government of South Australia is pleased to extend this opportunity to an second winner in 2006', said the Minister Assisting the Premier for the Arts, the Hon. John Hill

As a result of their win, both acts will perform at FreshFM's School's Out for Summer party at Savvy at 11 pm this Friday night, and next week Subsketch will be Fresh FM's artist of the week.
