Blak Traks
Launch of Kurruru's Blak Traks 08 CD
“Blak Traks 08” a new compilation of musical works by young and deadly emerging Aboriginal musicians from across metropolitan and regional South Australia will be launched by Kurruru Youth Performing Arts as part of Reconciliation Week celebrations at the Parks Community Centre on Thursday, May 29th at 1pm.
The launch of Blak Traks 08 is the culmination of a recording project which has seen musicians and producers, spearheaded by a creative team of MC Simplex (Andrew Simmons), Jimblah (James Alberts) and Robert Champion, working with young people from Aboriginal communities as diverse as Ceduna, Pt Lincoln and Copley and Pt Augusta.
Additionally the team worked with Aboriginal young men and women currently in the Cavan and Magill Youth Training Centres and with a group of Kurruru.s own young male performers at a boy's camp. which took place over three days at Camp Coorong near Meningie.
Emerging Adelaide-based Aboriginal recording artists and groups like Shadows and Nunga G also contributed their own original works to the album.
“This project is about supporting young people.s voices to be heard telling the stories that are important to them”, explains Nick Leidig, Kurruru's Boys Project Officer and coordination of this year's Blak Traks project. “Through working with the young offenders in Magill and Cavan, we are able to provide these kids with a platform to devise and record music that expresses their experiences, stories and opinions to a wide audience”.
Kurruru received support for the project from the State Government's Social Inclusion Initiative which has provided funding to the organisation to support a range of project targeting young men. Additional support was received from the South Australian Youth Arts Board, the Australia Council and the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
“Blak Traks 08 allowed young Aboriginal people from regional and remote communities to work with professional artists learning skills in song-writing and recording and through hearing the finished works it builds their confidence and sense of self-worth. The project also provides emerging Aboriginal artists with more opportunity to gain new audiences for the deadly style of music.”
Kurruru will be launching the new compilation CD at a Reconciliation week event being held from 1.pm on Thursday 29 May at the Parks Community Centre, 2 – 46 Cowan Street, Angle Park. The event will feature performances from some of the artists featured on the album.
The album can be ordered from Kurruru for only $22 (inc GST) + postage. For ordering information contact Kurruru by calling 8341 1150 or emailing info@kurruru.org.au .
