Winners of the Derringers Music 2008 Adelaide Blues Awards will be announced at the 'Juke Joint at Queens' in a separate ceremony on Saturday October 4th. Winners in all categories receive prizes provided by DERRINGERS MUSIC PTY LTD .

For decades, the blues has watched modern music’s many fads come and go in clouds of glitter, only to keep striding purposefully on. It has inspired some of the greatest musical acts of our time, yet despite the popularity enjoyed here by local and visiting blues acts, and the continuing success of blues and roots festivals interstate, Adelaide has not hosted a big-billing dedicated blues event – until now.

For one night only, the Queens Theatre will be transformed to recreate the makeshift bars and clubs of 1930s Mississippi that became known as juke joints, where weary workers sought release in the simplicity of a cold beer and the grinding rhythms of travelling bluesmen.

The blues played in the juke joints of the Deep South influenced generations of blues musicians from  Los Angeles to Texas to Memphis to Chicago to New York. It fostered a love-child in the 1950s, and through rock ‘n’ roll the blues has been continually re-born and introduced to subsequent generations as the soul and foundation of modern music.

The enduring appeal of the blues lies in its healing properties; the purging tales of trouble and strife that anyone can empathise with. It’s organic and real and spiritually uplifting for musician and listener alike. It’s the original dance music. Yet, its qualities remain as relevant but modern suburban life brings its woes just the same. Life has become over-complicated internet refrigerators. Consumerism is king, but the blues cares not for music videos, bling and sportscars – image is no substitute for talent.

And so, in an era of drive-thru dinners, on-line friendships and made-for-ringtone musical confectionary, Rossi Boots and Blue Pantz Productions present the elixir: the inaugural Juke Joint at Queens – a one-night-only homage to the twelve-bar salvation known as the blues.

Sponsors and Supporters of the event include Rossi Boots, Derringers Music, Ed Castle Hotel, The Adelaide Review, Rip it Up, Coopers, Slate Bourbon, STAX subs & coffee, The Modern Home and Mad Promo.
