City South Association is pleased to announce the 5th Annual Whitmore Square Arts Fair will be held in Whitmore Square between 11am - 4pm on Sunday 23 November 2008.

The Whitmore Square Arts Fair is a great place to find unique Christmas gifts, experience wonderful music and enjoy free art workshops suitable for all ages.

FREE CONCERT AT THE WHITMORE SQUARE ARTS FAIR

Headlining the stage at WSAF 2008 will be Acoustic-Folk combo Brillig , Alt-Country Duo The Sea Thieves and the charming and always entertaining Folk-Pop favourite Cookie Baker .

The musical line-up is complimented by the world music sounds of Nice Verdes , and the Second-Wind Ensemble.

The concert is free and runs between 11am - 4pm.

BRILLIG

Driven by the vocal harmony & interplay between lead singers and multi-instrumentalists Matt Swayne & Elizabeth Reid, Brillig's sound features a graceful combination of acoustic guitar, viola, autoharp, harmonica, banjo, piano accordion and ukulele. The band have shared the stage with many acclaimed acts including The Handsome Family (USA), The Audreys, CW Stoneking, Ned Collette, Sime Nugent, Martin Martini & The Bone Palace Orchestra, and The Yearlings, and have performed across Australia. Brillig’s new EP ‘Jack Davey’ was released 31 October.

THE SEA THIEVES

The Sea Thieves are Naomi Thompson and Zac Coligan, both talented musos and the driving force behind respected local venue The Jade Monkey. Their amazing debut album ‘Hiding in the shade’ features a collection of dusty samples and old instruments, recorded with just a few basic microphones and imbued with the echo of wooden floorboards and bluestone walls. In their music you will hear the pluck of the ukulele, the wheeze of accordion bellows and the singing of a saw.

COOKIE BAKER

An effervescent yet relaxed and personable performer and an introspective songwriter, Cookie Baker has shared stages with Augie March, Little Birdy, Ben Lee, Kate Miller-Heidke and The Audreys. Uplifting, wry, observant and downright honest in her approach to life’s little tricks, flips and whimsies, Cookie Baker’s debut album ‘Gala Day’ is gently arresting, mature yet playful, and feels like ‘story time for grownups’. Described as an aural novella, laden with haunting strings, barnyard percussion and a rich, raw and melancholic vocal quality, this wonderful LP is aimed square at the heart.

NICE VERDES

Danceable, uplifting and blending traditional music with original composition, Nice Verdes create their own world fusion. Nice Verdes have, and continue to travel, learning, studying, and collecting tunes and influences from around the world, especially from Africa and Latin America. Their sound is hard to categorize - all at once bluesy, Latin, gypsy, jungle, folk, and constantly growing. It remains true however, to the spirit of the peace march, by celebrating unity in diversity, equality, and sound 'ecology'.

SECOND-WIND ENSEMBLE

The Second-Wind Ensemble is unique in that it originated as a band begun specifically for beginners who were late starters to music. When the group began most of the members were taking up an instrument for the first time. The name of the band arose from this rejuvenating lifestyle change. The name also reflects the fact that the band is made up almost entirely of wind instruments. Music played by the ensemble varies in style from the more classical to popular music over different eras.
