Adelaide Searches for a Star
Adelaide's annual Search for a Star talent quest – together with the help of the AMP Foundation – is this year hoping to raise $30,000 to help deaf infants with a unique new music program through the Cora Barclay Centre.
Potential pop stars will come out of the woodwork from Tuesday, June 3rd for the first round of heats at Fellini's Restaurant in North Adelaide.
While local performers will vie for a range of prizes valued at over $20,000 and include the chance to audition for Adelaide Carols by Candlelight and a CD compiled, mastered and recorded by Majestic Audio. The Cora Barclay Centre also will be a winner, with all proceeds from this year's competition going towards funding a new early intervention program for deaf babies at the new centre in North Adelaide.
The AMP Foundation, through its national Community Fundraising Program, has agreed to match money raised from the event up to $20,000.
Cora Barclay Centre CEO Michael Forwood said that with increasing client numbers and new technologies, the centre was greatly in need of more funding. He said that with the help of the AMP Foundation and money raised through the Search for a Star event, more hearing impaired South Australian babies would have the chance to gain the sense of hearing and learn to speak.
"Since hearing tests were made available for every baby born in South Australia, more families are seeking services from our centre, which provides trained therapists to help even the most profoundly deaf child learn to listen and speak," Mr Forwood said.
"We are hoping to expand our early intervention program for deaf infants to include a specialised music and movement program. This will be an exciting addition to our service which can actually teach deaf children pitch, rhythm and intonation in their speech in a fun and creative way."
AMP Financial Planner Terry Evreniadis said the AMP Foundation was delighted to be supporting not only Adelaide's local music talent, but also the world class services provided by the Cora Barclay Centre to help hearing impaired children achieve their full potential through cochlear implants and early intervention programs.
"It really gives us great pleasure to give something back to such a worthy cause in the community where we live and work," Mr Evreniadis said.
This is the 10th year of the highly successful Search for a Star event, and the first year run solely by the Cora Barclay Centre. Designed to locate & highlight the best local soloists & bands South Australia has to offer & showcase this talent to the general public, sponsors & industry professionals. The AMP Foundation Search for a star will see solo singers, musicians and bands compete at weekly heats over the next 10 weeks, culminating in a grand final event in November.
