single: going under

The Dunes describe themselves as a 'dream pop' band and upon reviewing their debut release 'Going Under', they could not be more adequately labeled. Lilting reverb-drenched vocal melodies and slide guitars punctuate the two tracks on offer, 'Going Under' and 'Dress to Kill', with the former evoking harmonic memories of '90s-era Radiohead.

The Dunes sound is heavily entrenched in the '90s-'00s indie/alternative genre, and when they cite their musical inspirations as Mazzy Star, Calexico, Grant Lee Buffalo, Nick Drake and Portishead, it is easy to see their influences shining through in the music.

The two musicians that make up The Dunes are Stacie Reeves on vocals/percussion and Matt Reiner on guitar. For a band so diminutive in size, the music is full and warm in timbre and leaves you feeling as if you were sitting in a Texan saloon bar watching tumble weeds blow by.

If this appeals to you, you can catch The Dunes in the flesh on Friday, Jan 6, 2012 at 9pm at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. While it may not be a Texan Saloon bar, it's still a damn fine setting for you to lose yourself in the music this dreamy duo have to offer.
