ep: greet the sun
Greet the Sun is the first EP from the folksy-roots act The Timbers, to be released at The Promethean on Friday 25 March 2011. The Timbers have been together for only two years - their synergy is impressive.
The EP features an interesting range of sounds and instruments. The upbeat opening track, ‘Creeping Shade’, introduces listeners to lead vocalist Simon Basey, who is just a little bit reminiscent of early Cat Stevens. Sarah O’Brien’s superb violin work carries ‘the Scar’; a track highly rated among Timbers pundits. Listen out for Craig Atkins’ great percussion work on the end of track. ‘The Traveller’ showcases The Timbers’ love of intelligent lyrics and good story-telling, and the Mumford and Sons influence is clear. Track 5 ‘All Your Say’ is the standout; it’s tightly composed with multiple interesting layers.
Overall The Timbers’ sound is confident. Give this EP a few listens! Basey and Roberts both have strong vocals, O’Brien’s violin work is a joy to listen to, thoughtful lyrics, and some nice twists with instrument choices beyond ordinary. The Timbers' tracks on Triple J Unearthed attracted attention early on and they have enjoyed lots of time in the local spotlight since then. Listening to Greet the Sun is intriguing enough to go see The Timbers live. Get to the launch if you can!
