Red Rascal Red is the Colour of Revolution

A solid debut, Red is the Colour of Revolution is a summation of serious hard playing with jagged, jarring 70’s punk inspired tunes which even with the volume turned down rocks the foundations.
Red rascal is a not-quite-a-girl band with quirky songs that sound like something from The Rezillos mixed with Eddie and the Hot Rods and The Runaways. But in songs like Bong Pig, Vomit Monster, Work Like a Bitch and Telephone Love, Red Rascals have a typical new wave sound but with much more of a catchy pop feel with loud guitars rather than a sneering, obnoxious type of thing. There are singsong choruses, cool riffing, and strong song-writing delivered with energy. Overall there’s real conviction in the playing.
Many bands write good melody and snappy hooks but Red Rascal does that with a, XTC or Buzzcocks tongue-in-cheek style evinced in the sarcastic lyrics to Other Girlfriend; “I want to sit on your lap… I wanna be your other girlfriend.” It’s more Tom Robinson than L7 and it’s contagious and witty. These girls, Alayna De Graff (bass) and Dorothy Pawlowski (guitar), really do want to have fun.
Like The Vibrators or Pure Mania, Red Rascal, embodies a lot of what is classic about true punk; the sounds slightly ramshackle and driven by fire and passion. But the difference is these girls have abandoned the anger and instead have replaced it with a sense of humour. It’s good stuff.
