Zeal2007 single Salt Reviewed by Steve Davenport 6 September 2007 “All of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears.” John F. Kenndy
22 year old Robert Jarvis – going under the pseudonym ZEAL - creates smooth and pleasantly poppy electro-rock in his bedroom. Salt, taken from Zeal’s forthcoming debut EP, THIS IS HOW I HEAR YOUR VOICE is filled with rich grooves and delicate melodies with subtle introspection.
After featuring on Triple J’s Unearthed, Zeal has gained recognition as a purveyor of stylish and semi-club-orientated music which is plenty fun. Salt coupled with Yumi and the Sky (and the faux Pas remix of Yumi) sounds mature with layered vibrant synthetics, light guitar work and subdued percussion. The result is something a tad eccentric, a little imitative and a lot of cool, quirky pop. Overall, Jarvis is a confident, skilled musician worthy of his salt who has written a couple of highly listenable songs over which his vocals glide effortlessly. If this uncanny ability to inject energy and urgency into starkly simple tunes continues onto the debut EP then it will be well worth buying.
