You may never have heard of Social Change, but these born and bred rap-heads from Adelaide claim "We ain't new to this/ we've been doing this/ since you were in your mum's uterus." The lyric comes from "So Fly" the opening track of the band's "V.High. EP." By the measure of pure sound, this EP is a collection of catchy, subtle tunes and also a glorious feast of hip-hop pleasures.
Despite the band's claim that everyone, "heed the rhyme you never met a bunch of rappers so genuine," there's little innovation here but there's plenty of swagger and polish. Overall, Social Change has created a four song EP that's Hip! Hop! Hurray!
"V.High.EP" is an arrestingly, chillingly good CD that's almost hip-hop hippie in tone. It's a genuinely bright, fun, and intelligent record on which "Social Change" does everything right, from cold, hardcore rhymes over uncomplicated soulful beats to mesmerising rap. These songs, written and delivered by artificers in command of every aspect of their craft have an addictive quality.
No one is going to accuse Social Change of overstuffing this CD: it lasts barely long enough to provide a generous dose of boasts. It's a small EP but it's a very personal work with lots to say, "love to give... lots to do... and life to live." It's all delivered in a dripping bluesy voice that has unassailable authority and strong storytelling ability.
Social Change is smart, but not too clever for its own good. "V.High. EP" is a forthright hook-filled CD that's brimming with confidence. This release is not only for hip-hop fans, but for everyone. |
