'Clever, sophisticated, laid-back, personal and inspiring.' - Rip It Up
With a gee-tah in hand, a spring in her step and a handful of tunes depicting the latest round of girly shenanigans, Cookie Baker - usually a rolling ball of energy, sometimes sombre, sporadically drunk and disorderly and always the last to leave the party in case of missing out on something life-changing or song-inspiring (or a game of nude limbo) - is your classic example of a deludedly angelic, selfish-solo-artist/angsty-guitar-chick-with-big-hair-on-wheels. Ha! Well, sort of...
Blessed with a charming and relaxed stage presence and the ability to "talk the leg off a chair", Miss Cookie's lyrics are often peppered with the ubiquitous 'I love you! You hate me! You need me! I want you!' fiasco (with the occasional tale of adulterous uncles, hearts like broken teacups and suddenly finding your best mate REALLY attractive thrown in for good measure). The catch? These stories are cleverly sweetened by Cookie's uncanny knack to have you spellbound with her infectious blend of refreshingly whimsical guitar 'n' piano faux-folk licks, gorgeous sugar-velvet vocal melodies and perhaps (more than) a hint of cheek!
Not one to be easily pinned down, Cookie has gallivanted around the countryside performing numerous times on live-to-air radio (she currently heads a mock-up cooking class on Radio Adelaide entitled 'Melting Moments with Cookie Baker'!) and her massive ebony tresses are often spotted on independent arts festival bills. In 2005, Cookie released a limited edition 3-track "mini"-EP ('Pocket Edition') to keep the kids happy (yet wanting more!) and subsequently received national airplay on Triple J and ABC Radio, as well as becoming a popular addition to the local playlists of 3DRadio and Radio Adelaide.
In February 2008, Cookie sold out her Adelaide Fringe show 'Dark Horse in an Ivory Veil' featuring her six-piece ensemble (Special Secret Spells). She also recently shared stages with Darren Hanlon, Angie Hart (Frente!, Splendid) and Kate Miller-Heidke on their respective album tours.
An Adelaide live music favourite (and a regular musical sighting around the country) and a past opener for Augie March, Ben Lee, Old Man River, Little Birdy and The Audreys, Miss Cookie is currently recording her debut album to be released through Mixmasters Records/MGM late 2008.
Oh, and she continues to strive to perfect her coconut martini. Bottoms up!
