The John Woods Band
Genre: Acoustic, Folk, Roots
The John Woods Band deliver a rootsy mix of styles varying from upbeat, soulful acoustic melodies to driving reggae rhythms. Guitarist and songwriter John Woods writes lyrics that communicate earnest expressions of love and clever insights into everyday life, all delivered with warmth, sincerity and light-hearted cheek.
Bass player Tim Bennett and drummer/percussionist Dan Ryan complete the band, bringing passionate, energetic grooves and beautiful three-part harmonies. Not only do they create an engaging and lively atmosphere, but they maintain a great rapport with their audiences at every show they play.
They experienced a whirlwind debut in 2007, when after playing their first gig together at the Adelaide Festival Centre they were offered supports for some of the nations leading roots acts including Mia Dyson, Xavier Rudd, Ash Grunwald and Lior. They rapidly developed a strong following in their hometown selling out headline shows at some of Adelaide’s leading live music venues, and topping the year off with Triple J and Nova airplay of the track ‘Higher Science’ from John’s solo EP Pockets.
2008 promises to be even bigger for the boys as their song ‘Higher Science’ has also been picked up by Nova and they have been offered a spot at the Adelaide Big Day Out where they’ll perform on the Local Produce Stage.
In fact, they’re so keen to keep the ball rolling that they’ll be heading into the studio the day after Big Day Out to lay down tracks for their first full-band recording. The EP will feature mostly new songs and will include some special guest musicians such as John Bedggood, who also worked on Bernard Fanning’s ARIA award-winning album ‘Tea & Sympathy’ amongst others.
The John Woods Band will be releasing their EP in June and touring nationally in July.
"Life is truly wonderful when you expect a good gig and experience a great one. Such was the case when the johnwoods band took over the Gov for a night of peerless blues ‘n’ roots ... This was the first time I’d seen the johnwoods band but it certainly won’t be the last. If you haven’t caught them yet, they are an absolute treat."
