Lord Stompy
Genre:, Acoustic, Comedy, Experimental, Folk, Gonzo, Rock, Spoken Word, World
Lord Stompy is a well rounded original artist of much unusual talent & contradiction. He usually plays solo, but occasionally resorts to cheap lowbrow comedy in his Australiana country band "The Pork Hunts". Musically he's a recycling depot of disparate styles, he has absorbed 1920's blues, sea shanties, punk, gypsy, old time jazz and more, and then let the mixture simmer in the jumbled melting pot of his imagination. The themes of his song writing run from hard-hitting political, comedy, romance thru to experimental and abstract. In 2006 he teamed with Amanda Davies for the comedy show "How Rude!" at Adelaide Fringe Festival, an outing that earned a one star review from Samela Harris in The Advertiser. (Her only comment about His Lordships' performance: "Lord Stompy sings songs about masturbation.") He soon made waves in The Advertiser again when liberal workplace relations minister, Kevin Andrews, slammed Lord Stompys' involvement with Unions SA. His song "Hurry Up and Die, John", a cutting satire of the then Prime Minister obviously hitting a raw nerve. (The Advertiser 28th Nov. 2006, "Howard Death Song".) Branded "tasteless" and "offensive" by Kev he went on to play in the National Anti Industrial Relations Rally the next day to much popular acclaim.
His Lordships harmonica playing is legendary, he has played live with the likes of The Audreys, Craig Sinclair, Soursob Bob, Melanie Horsnell, Poetikool Justice, Dylan Ferguson to name but a few, as well as making guest appearances on various artists CDs. Over the years he has toured sporadically, run various open mics, been a regular performer at SA's leading live venue, The Governor Hindmarsh, has played Israel Hands in Unmasked Theaters' "Treasure Island" as well as writing the live music score for the show (he loves a good sea shanty). Most recently has been honoured with the chance to run a songwriters workshop with other leading SA artists for Feast Festival 2009, Adelaides' premiere gay/ lesbian event.
He released his debut album, "Individuality? Just Say No!" in 2004, and is about to release album no. 2, "Cold Water Dream.” in a few months.
In the meantime he continues to occasionally makes appearances with his comedy Australiana band “The Pork Hunts”, and works with other musos on various projects. He is currently cross pollinatintg with “God God Dammit Dammit” on drums, guitar and harp. Cacophony forever boys!
