ABOUT RAW ETHER….. After over five years of gigging around Adelaide’s pub venues, ‘Raw Ether’ (Benny Tamblyn (Lead Guitar), Kacee Heidt (Bass/Lead Vocals), and Oscar Westell (Drums/Backing Vocals) have established a reputation among local music fans as a hard rocking live act. The band came together as many young bands do, lunch-time jam sessions in the school music centre in 2005, but it was soon apparent that this trio, then still only 17, had ‘something’, including the desire to share their music with a broader audience. A great crowd reaction at Billy Bob’s BBQ Jam at The Grace Emily Hotel on several occasions in early 2006 gave the lads the confidence to seek out their first gig. Many more were soon to follow, including selection in Carclew’s Off the Couch program in December that year. Being selected as State Finalists in the 2008 National Campus Band Competition (NCBC) is their most recent noteworthy achievement, but they also made the state finals of the 2007 Emergenza Contest, and were chosen to take part in the Adelaide Fringe ‘10x10xFringe’ Project in 2008. (The film clip, directed by Emily Brindal, is viewable on their Myspace page.) People seeing Raw Ether for the first time are usually blown away by their stage presence, finding it hard to believe that a three piece rock band can produce so much punch. Industry judges feedback from the NCBC State final had comments such as; “3-piece bands can get swamped at The Gov – but you guys killed it!” and, “Huge sound for a three piece…” (Footage of the final taken by “Adelaide Band Wagon” can also be seen on Raw Ether’s Myspace page.) Early attempts at getting a serious recording made on a small budget resulted in problems with sound quality, and the band, wanting to truly showcase their ability found themselves continually frustrated. The word got to Matt Williams at FatTrax Studios, who had seen the band perform and really appreciated their potential, and he offered to help. The result is their first professionally recorded EP, launched to a capacity crowd at The Grace Emily in Jan 09. After a break for most of 2009, they played a return show in November and had lost none of the energy that they've become known for.
