Ben from Goldstein

Goldstein - Ben Hooper

Band Name: Goldstein

*Your Name: Ben Hooper
*Role in the band: fiddle player in Goldstein.
*Your music in 20 words or less:  Goldstein is an Adelaide folk band with a bunch of original songs about growing up and living in Australia.
*Proudest Band Achievement: Knocking out our first CD "Spurs on My Boots" and hearing the single from it, Great Fishing, played on Triple J.
*Secret Talent: Can shave my head in less than 15 minutes.
*Fondest Gig Memory:
Our first ever gig in front of a few loyal friends and family at the Joiners Arms. It was a huge buzz to know that we had finally gotten our grand idea of forming an originals band up and running. Someone in the crowd that night also stole one of our CDs for sale, which I think was a good thing - shows it was sought after!
*Dream Support: Paul Kelly, Ben Folds.
*Best thing about being an SA musician: Other local musicians are genuinely interested in what each other is doing and very supportive.
*Worst thing about being an SA musician:
Everyone says lack of venues and I tend to agree, particularly when you're not a cover band.
*Lovin' which local Venue(s)
: Any which gives a local originals band a go, but the Daniel O'Connell is a sentimental favourite as it's where I took my first nervous steps away from classical music at the Celtic jam sessions there on Tuesday nights. We had our CD launch there this year too because of the great atmosphere you get in the front bar.
*Fave Local Acts: I can't single out one but any band that keeps plugging away at their own music when you keep getting drunken requests for Khe Sanh gets my vote.
*Industry Hero: I've always been a fan of local jazz violinist Brian Porter. He once gave me a free lesson on improvisation at home back when I was in high school and I taped it for safekeeping.
*Current album: Spurs on My Boots.

Peri from The Ides

Peri - The Ides

Band Name: The Ides

* Name/nickname: Peri Strathearn, or sometimes just Pez
* Role in the band: Bassist/vocalist/elected manager/the One in the Hat
* Your music in 20 words or less: Semi-acoustic pop/rock. Sometimes funky or rockin', sometimes moody, usually catchy and always lyrical. 'Sitcom-theme pop' (I'm told).
* Proudest band achievement: Playing at Carclew's acoustic Off the Couch showcase in February of 2007 was a highlight and probably the biggest gig we've played. It's always nice to be singled out by people who know their music, whether it's in the context of Carclew, the National Campus Band Comp, or anywhere else. (We made it to the Flinders final of the NCBC each of the last two years, and each of those announcements was a great moment. This year unfortunately we've run out of students.)
* Secret talent: Beard craftsmanship. Though that's hardly a secret, is it?
* Fondest gig memory: The second time we played at the front bar of the Gov. One of our more popular songs is called 'The Governor Hindmarsh', and it's about our aspirations to play to a huge crowd on the stage out the back; it's been part of the story of our band from the outset. That night, for whatever reason, we were in the zone - we got a good crowd, cranked out a tight set in our favourite venue, everyone was into it... good times.
* Dream support: The Whitlams, out the back of said Gov.
* Dream rider: As long as I've got my bass-playing (and old car-driving) hat, I'm all good, thanks.
* Best thing about being an SA musician: Everyone knows or knows of everyone else, and everyone's friendly and glad to help each other, pretty much. Why go to Melbourne and be a small fish? Adelaide's plenty of fun. The street press are accessible, word of mouth gets around. I was quoted once as saying the Ides are 'South Australian to the core' ...the phrasing is a personal embarrassment to me, but the point's fair enough.
* Worst thing about being an SA musician: I suppose there's only so much you can do, especially if you don't fit neatly into the genres Adelaide likes - heavy rock, hip hop and *shudders* cover bands.
* Lovin' which local venues: The Wheaty , the Gov , the Jade Monkey, the Ice Arena (hahaha), the Grace Emily, Jive
* Fave local acts: Josh Spier , Tom West, Nadjeska , the Sundance Kids pre-drums and bass, the Finishing Schoo l, Goose, Marmalade Circus, Jayne-Anne Power , MPC , the Matt Winter Band , and Ben Folds because he still counts. * Industry hero: Hero bassist: Damien Steele-Scott, who has a hat too. Maybe Rai Thistlethwayte from Thirsty Merc, or Neil Finn, or Tim Freedman. The man behind the Enthusiasm Police is my favourite ukelale hero.
* Current EP: Still coming as soon as we have enough cash and a new drummer, I promise! I know you're all getting itchy out there - so are Bren, Romen and I.

Ash from The Sundance Kids

The Sundance Kids

Band Name: The Sundance Kids

*Your Name: Ash Gale (pictured 2nd from left)
*Your music in 20 words or less: Acoustic/pop rock, uplifting, emotive, spacious, sing along anthem, romantic/spiritual, energy powerhouse, inclusive. Endorsing love and fist in the air rock
*Proudest Band Achievement:
Our new EP "including the atmosphere"
*Secret Talent: backing back a trailer*
*Fondest Gig Memory: Blackstump festival in Sydney 2007
*Dream Support: Switchfoot, Dashboard Confessional
*Best thing about being an SA musician: the support that is available
*Worst thing about being an SA musician: there are no major record labels here
*Lovin' which local Venue(s)
: Jive , Fowlers , The Gov
*Fave Local Acts: In-fiction, Joshua Spier , Move to Strike, City Riots, The State Versus, Tiger Stripes, Wone
*Industry Hero: Patrick Robertson
*Current album: "including the atmosphere" launched at The Gov on Friday 25th May, with special guests, Move to Strike, City Riots, Xavia. Doors at 8pm, $12 entry or $20 with CD. See you there! Peace and love
