Tristan Newsome and the Flying Squad

::

Genre: Acoustic, Folk, Blues, Alt. Country

I’m Tristan generally a solo musician but have a revolving door of helpers who I like to tag The Flying Squad. I love music and performing and pour myself into my performance – draining for me but rewarding at the same time. Born in Adelaide 24ish years ago, moved to Brisbane late 2007 and am now moving back to Adelaide 1st of June 2008. My style of music is best described as a medley. It has pop, blues, folk and country elements. I’ve been given various comparisons being told I’m ‘Dylanish’ and have been compared to Townes Van Zandt. The best description of been given is “Troubadour so I’ll” stick with that!

I’m currently busy writing songs and sifting through existing songs to decide what to record for late 2008. It’ll be my first “Official” album release so it’s going to take a bit of time. At this point it looks like being an independent release. In addition I have a not very top secret side project that I’m working on with a friend for a bit of electro (think Presets/Joy Division) style music. I’m also rounding out my Country and Western musical “El Cheechio the Angry Mexican” whether that ever gets heard outside of my practice studio remains to be seen!

My music attracts a pretty diverse audience, I don’t think there’s a stereo type for the people that enjoy it but people that enjoy lyrics in music get a lot out of it. I try and cover a wide range of topics in my song writing from love songs, to politics, to break ups, too humorous character songs (see above mentioned El Cheechio).

I like to try and convey a bit of a dandy image. The lyrical content of my songs lends to this quite well and some of my biggest influences are Oscar Wilde (the original Dandy), Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Rimbaud, and Ginsberg.

I originally started out in high school singing in grunge bands. Eventually I got sick or trying to communicate how I wanted a tune to go so I decided to learn the guitar. I taught myself to play the guitar and formed a band called Tourette that started out as grunge band but ended up Glam rock. We called it Tourette due to the diversity of music we were playing at the time. Once Tourette ended I put most of my focus on my acoustic work. I dabbled in some side projects with different bands but nothing stuck. Over this period I taught myself how to play a number of instruments. I’d list them but it grows every week (or every time I find something odd to play.

I’ve played to many shows to remember 90% memorable 10% not but its all experience! I find that my music translates well both in an inner city Upscale pub and the old tin shed pub out in the country side.

Was a finalist in Search for a Singer (Adelaide) not bad considering I was playing folk against Mariah Carey die hards… Another was I came second in a Rock Competition again to illustrate the success of this 1st was a death metal band and 3rd was a punk band. I did smash my guitar halfway through the set (oh yes I’m a folk rock rebel).

I’ve had airplay different places in the world on various radio stations via a couple of compilations I’ve been included on (most recently Starving Kids Records have you heard compilation.) I’ve also been on Awesam TV for an interview and show with myself and friends “Anthony D’Antonio” and “The Letters”.

I hope to get my music to all corners of the world so people can hear what I do. If I can make a living and tour off it one day that would be the greatest.

I don’t currently have a manager or agent and do all booking and marketing myself. If anyone is interested in taking this over for me I’d be more then happy to talk. You can contact me via Myspace or tristan.newsome@hotmail.com
