How do you solve a problem like Maria (I mean Unjay)? Well, perhaps you simply don't. And I think that this is partly why his songs are so captivating - they are riddles inside mysteries, wrapped in enigmas. Really he is a poet, and he can take a pop song like "About a bee" (from his Five Recent Songs demo) and invest it with double and treble entendre- he has a way with words...
Former guitarist, singer and songwriter with Adelaide indie secret legends The Daisyheads, Unjay has accepted a teaching post in Australia and now leads a quiet life surrounded by his guitars Redhead, Blondie, Amber and his bass Watson...
Though primarily a singer/guitarist, Unjay is not unaccustomed to dabbling in the world of electronic blips and beats. He has also been setting up a studio, somehow scraping together impressive professional hardware and software that he probably can't afford. BLaCKbERRy JaM RecordS is his project/pro studio which has already recorded and produced demos for several local artists.
Currently, Unjay has been recording songs based on the ancient mystical Sufi poems of Rumi. This is not such an obscure thing as it may appear: Unjay is informed that Rumi is the top selling poet in America today, not bad for someone several hunderd years old! The songs and instrumentals comprising this album are both richly textured and varied in style, evocative of The East but with a rock sensibility and with an esoteric lyrical layer to explore, they are instantly enchanting. Virtual synths happily play among actual Tibetan singing bowls ("Bells, Flowers and Tea"), while acoustic guitars frolic among driving Ultrabeat rhythms.
Unjay has been getting some local radio airplay with one of his Rumi songs, "Today like every other day", and is currently courting European and US label interest.
