Since forming in June 2011, local indie-noise-punkers Horror My Friend have established themselves as one of Adelaide’s most promising young bands. After a string of releases and an impressive run of support slots for bands like The Cribs (UK), Violent Soho, DZ Deathrays, Swervedriver (UK), Dune Rats and British India, Horror My Friend’s new single, ‘Mazes’, marks the band’s first recorded output of 2015.

Somewhere between the jangly, dreamy guitar intro and the fuzzed out wall of sound later in the song exists the juxtaposition at the heart of Horror My Friend’s music: tension and release, light and shade. Whilst the song’s vocal delivery is passionate and raw, the first verse reads “second guessing everything I do / hoping what I said had made some sense to you / staring speechless down towards my shoes” suggesting that maybe the song’s gusto is built not from vigor but from vulnerability.

Clocking in at just over three and a half minutes, “Mazes” could well be one of the strongest rock songs to come out of Adelaide in recent memory.
